The cleaner, greener way to seal

In essence, the advantages of TPV are that it:

  • Performs with the reliability of rubber
  • Processes with the ease, economies and versatility of plastic
  • Is infinitely greener than EPDM sealing compounds

During the 1990s, EPDM was the elastomer of choice for 95% of dynamic and semi-dynamic automotive sealing applications. But as the decade closed, the spotlight focused on a new material that performed like EPDM, yet processed with the ease of plastic.

TPV is a dynamically cross-linked mixture of EPDM and polypropylene. Precisely formulated and processed, the compound offers a combination of excellent thermoplastic and elastomeric properties (hardness, flexibility, elasticity) with the ease of thermoplastic processing.

The raw material cost is higher for TPV than traditional thermoset rubbers such as EPDM, but this is more than offset by cost savings on the finished part or assembly. TPV weatherseals reduce finished part cost by simplifying fabrication, reducing processing times, and lowering scrap rates. TPV scrap is 100% recyclable and directly reprocessable. JyFlex™ also reduces mass 20% - 30% – material savings that go right to the bottom line. Costly secondary and finishing operations can be reduced or eliminated for additional cost savings. Savings increase even more when the sealing system and mating components are designed for TPV instead of for thermoset rubber. Due to dimensional stability during fabrication, parts fabricated with TPVs typically have less than half the part tolerances needed for rubber. TPVs’ versatility enables new system designs and part consolidation, allowing other thermoplastic materials to be easily integrated to eliminate metal inserts.

By the time the dust settles, finished part costs are typically 20% lower than EPDM. The savings are often even more impressive; Jyco reduced the cost of a glass run channel program by 31%.
